Meta has announced that it has plans to seek proposals from nuclear power developers as part of its strategy to meet its artificial intelligence and environmental objectives.
The company has the objective to add between 1 and 4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity in the U.S. started beginning early 2030s, along with aligning with growing electricity demands driven by increasing data centre energy consumption.
U.S. data centre power use stated that it has projected to triple between 2023 and 2030, which require an additional 47 gigawatts of generation capacity.
To meet this demand with nuclear energy, it will be challenging due to its regulatory hurdles, the concerns with uranium fuel supply, and the opposition from the locals to build nuclear plants.
Meta has invited developers with expertise in community engagement, permitting, and reactor development to submit proposals by February 7, 2025.
The company is open to both small modular reactors and traditional larger nuclear reactors, acknowledging the capital-intensive and lengthy development process compared to renewable energy projects
