Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, intends to widespread expand its supercomputer to Memphis, Tennessee, aiming to accommodate at least one million graphics processing units (GPUs), according to a statement from the Greater Memphis Chamber. This expansion will greater bolster xAI’s efforts to compete with rivals like OpenAI.
The supercomputer, named Colossus, currently operates with 100,000 GPUs to train xAI’s chatbot, Grok. As part of the planned expansion, key partners such as Nvidia, which provides the GPUs, and companies like Dell and Super Micro, which build the server racks for the system, will establish operations in Memphis, the chamber added.
Colossus plays a vital role in advancing Musk’s AI initiative, especially as he intensifies his rivalry with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman.
Recently, Musk expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company, along with Microsoft, of attempting to monopolize the AI sector.
The tenfold expansion of the xAI supercomputer is likely to spark environmental concerns, as the growing number of data centers has been criticized for their significant energy consumption.
In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center urged local Tennessee officials to investigate whether xAI was using gas turbines to power its supercomputer without the necessary air permits.
